Even as the day draws near when the world will meet in Copenhagen to find a solution to Climate Change, smaller countries like Nepal are trying hard to be heard and to draw attention to their own environmental problems. The Nepalese cabinet is making a risky journey this morning to the lap of Mount Everest to get its message out.

The cabinet meets at the Mount Everest base camp to highlight how climate change is shrinking Himalayan glaciers. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and more than 20 ministers, officials, journalists, and technicians reached Lukla in eastern Nepal yesterday, and will travel by helicopter to Kalapatthar in the Everest foothills for the meeting which will take place weather permitting.

Early on Friday morning (December 4) the Nepalese Prime Minister arrived at the airstrip at Syangboche prior to cabinet meeting. Nepal’s top brass were at Lakla region in Eastern Nepal from where they boarded a chopper all the way to the base camp of the tallest mountain in the World Mount Everest. The meeting is to last twenty minutes

The Cabinet intends to make a formal decision at the meeting on Nepal’s climate change policy and to endorse steps to protect the Himalayan environment.

Nepal wants to draw attention to issue not just in the Himalayas, but the problem of melting artic ice, drought in the Amazon and increasing acidity in the oceans.

Then, there is also the problem of rising sea levels and spring coming early to Europe. Excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere deserts increasing their spread and abnormal ice melts in the Antarctic are also worrying realities.

Nepal’s meet is a lead-up to the Climate Meet Summit in Copenhagen where countries will try to agree on capping emissions. India wants an internationally binding accord with developed and industrialized countries agreeing to take on a higher responsibility for cutting pollution.

On its part, India has offered to voluntarily reduce carbon emissions.

Nepal cabinet meet comes two months after the Maldives cabinet drew attention to climate change from the depths of the ocean. The country’s cabinet signed an agreement underwater using diving gear and water proof-ink. Nepal’s cabinet will be well-equipped too at their high-altitude meeting, with special clothes, oxygen masks and medicines at Kalapatthar plateau which is 5,240 meters (17,192 feet) above sea level.
