With strong reactions coming from across the border, after Pakistani players were not picked for the third edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the team owners on January 22 lashed out saying that they do not have to explain why the Pakistani players were not picked.Actress Shilpa Shetty, who co-owns the Rajasthan Royals IPL team, said that the franchisees couldn’t provide for the security of the Pakistan players and hence decided against bidding for them in the auction. She added that there was a lot of bitterness towards the team owners with hate mails being sent against them but there wasn’t any need to politicise the issue.
“We don’t owe an explanation on our decision on Pakistani players. The reasons for dropping are understandable in the current scenario. We would like the media and the people to react to such situations more sensibly and naturedly. Both India an Pakistan are cricket loving nations and nothing is bigger than the sport,” said Shilpa
“We wanted the players to be in the country during the time of the auction and at that point of time we were more worried about the security. We did not want to take onus for their security. At the end of the day we would have been the losers because we want our teams to play better,” added Shilpa.
Preity Zinta, co-owner of the Kings XI Punjab team said, “There were few Australian players also who were a part of the auction and were not picked by any team. Why are they not being targeted? It is a request for the country to collectively handle the situation sensibly.”
Meanwhile, IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has rejected any “conspiracy” in Pakistani players not being picked up for the world’s richest cricket tournament. “There is no conspiracy theory that is going on as is being reported in media. The media is biased at times,” he said at a press conference in Mumbai along with Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta.
Pakistan has reacted with outrage after none of its 11 cricketers put up for auction for IPL’s season three were picked up by franchisees.
Accusing Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman Lalit Modi of ‘betraying’ Pakistani players, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt has said that he would take up the issue of the treatment meted out to the cricketers during the IPL auction with the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI). “I had several discussions with Lalit on the participation of our players in the IPL this year and he had assured me they would get a chance to play in the tournament,” Butt said.
Disappointed at the snub, Butt said he was surprised to see that none of Pakistani cricketers were acquired during the IPL-3’s auction held in Mumbai on Tuesday.
“The IPL had given us the mandate to get permission from our foreign office, to obtain other clearances and to finalise visas. We did all this, but it is a surprise that none of them have been taken at the auction. We have been trying to get in touch with the concerned authorities but with no avail. I have asked the sports minister to speak to his counterpart in India about this,” The Daily Times quoted Butt, as saying.
Butt’s latest stand over the issue is in complete contrast to his earlier remarks, in which he had said that it hardly matters whether Pakistani cricketers participate in the IPL or not.
“It really does not bother us; what difference does it make to us if our players don’t play in the IPL this season? They didn’t play in the last season as well,” Butt had said earlier.
