In spite of India’s advancements in missile technology, the nation is yet a decade behind China, a lead Chinese defence analyst, has claimed and insisted that Beijing doesn’t view New Delhi as its “strategical challenger.” Shrugging off worries that fresher variants of India’s Agni missiles could strike the northmost tips of China, the state-run Global Times, citing a top analyst enjoined India could take five more years to accomplish this potentiality. The analyst too brushed off the claims that India is far ahead of China in uprising interceptor technology, the report alleged this week, days after India screened the Agni- III, which has a 3,500 km range. Chinese Rear Admiral Zhang Zhaozhong, a professor at the prestigious Chinese National Defence University, said India is still 10 to 15 years trailing China in terms of missile technology.
“It is however unknown when the Agni-III will be deployed by the Indian army, although they claim the missile is set for use. And it may take leastwise additional five years to prepare the Agni-V,” Zhang was cited as saying. He also claimed that China didn’t see India as a strategical challenger, and developed weapon system to counter it. “In building up its military technology, China has never taken India as a strategical challenger, and none of its weapons were specifically projected to contain India,” the Global Times quoted Zhang as saying.
“After Agni III and Agni V, as far as cities in China and Pakistan are concerned, there will be no target that we prefer to hit but can’t hit,” DRDO Chief V K Saraswat had said. In the beginning this week, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu had described China’s ties with India as “friendly and cooperative” and said both countries didn’t pose mutual threat. “I do not prefer to render or remark on the reports,” Ma said when asked to comment on the February seven launch of Agni-III which put China’s major cities within its strike range.
“The China-India relation is friendly and cooperative. China won’t be a threat to India, and nor will India pose a threat to China,” Ma said. India is set to test within a year an Agni-V nuclear-capable missile with a range of more than 5,000 kilometres, Saraswat, had said. “We feel our accuracy is better than China’s DF 21,” Saraswat had said of the Agni-III, which was test launched on February 7.
The DF-21 is China’s mid-range missile that debuted in 1999, along with its ICBM, the DF- 31, which the army uses. Zhang also dismissed Saraswat’s affirmation that India was ahead of China in the area of ballistic missile defence Zhang said the BMD accounts for only part of India’s interception system, which also covers early-warning and guidance.
“India’s technology for its measurement and control system, which is applied to trace launched missiles, continues at a very lower level, and they’re unable to establish a complete and reliable missile defence system,” Zhang claimed. Beijing test-fired its first missile interception system last month and successfully tested its anti-satellite system in 2007. The United States and Russia are the only two countries that have in reality deployed missile-interceptor technology.

China opposes Dalai Lama’s visit to Indian border area
Author: Susanta K Beura; Filed under: News & Views; Tagged as: anti-China, beijing china, border area, border dispute, business visa, china daily, chinese foreign ministry spokesman, chinese rule, chinese workers, Dalai Lama, foreign ministry spokesman, indian border, infrastructure sectors, memorandum of understanding, separatist activities, south asian nation, spiritual lesson, spiritual lessons, tawang, territorial integrity, tibetan struggle, visa policy
No CommentsChina on Tuesday (November 3) said it firmly opposed to the Dalai Lama’s scheduled visit to a disputed Indian border area.
The Dalai Lama is expected to give spiritual lessons beginning on November 8 to his followers in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh state, which is at the centre of a border dispute between China and India who have been trying to reduce tensions recently.
“We believe this further exposed the anti-China and separatist essence of the Dalai clique. China’s position on the so-called Arunachal Pradesh is consistent and clear and we firmly oppose the Dalai Lama’s visit to the region. We also believe this visit is one of his separatist activities in itself,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ma Zhaoxu told a regular news conference in Beijing.
China claims about 90,000 sq km (35,000 square miles) of Arunachal Pradesh along the border as part of its territory.
With India and China engaged in a race for regional supremacy, Beijing could see the Dalai Lama’s trip as encouraging the Tibetan struggle by undermining Chinese territorial integrity.
The Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule. He has since lived in Dharamsala, a hill town in northern Indian.
China called for India to reconsider its new visa policy which has driven thousands of Chinese workers out of the South Asian nation. “China has expressed concerns to India many times in regards to this issue. We hope the Indian government can provide convenience for Chinese people to get visas to work in India based on the memorandum of understanding on visa simplifying signed by both countries,” said Ma.
India tightened its visa policy in mid-July to curb unskilled foreign laborers, who are mainly Chinese working in the infrastructure sectors.
Many Chinese workers in India held six-month visas known as a multiple entry business visa, which allowed them to take a wide range of occupations, according to official China Daily.
But with the new visa policy in place, those workers have to apply for a work visa that needs to be approved by India’s Home Ministry and has stricter criteria to apply for. Approximately 25,000 Chinese workers will be affected, said China Daily.
India and China fought a short border war in 1962 and, despite burgeoning trade in recent years, mistrust remains.
